STEP THREE: Give Those Perennials Extra Care
All perennials should be cut back and fertilized when new growth first appears. This includes ornamental grasses, sedum and coneflowers along with all of your other perennial plants. This is an important step to promoting vigorous growth throughout the summer. Hosta should be divided and replanted if they haven't been in the past five years. This y'ear why not add a spectacular big leaf Hosta like 'Empress Wu' - it can grow to 4 ft. diameter in a few years and has light lavender blooms. Most important of all is to add a fresh layer of hardwood mulch across all of your beds. Mulch will save you money on water, keep weed seeds from germinating and supply needed nutrients to the soil.
