Hosta is a godsend for shady gardens and problem areas. Beautiful and versatile, hosta come in a seemingly endless variety of colors, textures and sizes. They are virtually indestructible and thrive on neglect. A word of caution - the deer will munch on them.
A member of the lily family, hosta varieties number to 4000 named cultivars. Sizes vary from 4 inches to over 3 feet tall. Most prefer at least part shade, but some varieties tolerate partial sun.
Hosta can be planted any time the ground isn't frozen and will grow in many soil conditions from heavy clay to sand. Divide, them in early spring or late summer.
